Friday is good but Sunday is better!
A couple of days ago I reflected on what makes Good Friday good. The writer of Hebrews made that question easy to answer, stating:
14Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.
Hebrews 2:14-15
It was through the death of the Christ that Satan has been rendered powerless. He has no authority, no hold, no threat of fear in the life of the one who has surrendered their life to the Saviour Jesus Christ. That makes Friday a good day in my opinion and God’s people have demonstrated its goodness by commemorating, even celebrating the death of Jesus ever since.
Good Friday is indeed good, however I know something that is better… Sunday. Why? The power that comes from Friday’s sacrifice is found in Sunday’s resurrection.
Paul wrote to the Corinthian believers in I Corinthians 15, famously known as the resurrection chapter of the Bible, these words:
13But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; 14and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain. 15Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; 17and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. 18Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.
1 Corinthians 15:13-19
Paul states in this passage that if Christ did not rise from the dead 6 tragic truths result:
- Our preaching is in vain (v14)
- Our faith is in vain (v14)
- We are liars (v15)
- We are still in our sins (v17)
- The dead in Christ have perished forever (v18)
- We are to be pitied more than anyone else (v19)
What a somber list this is indeed. Praise God that Paul didn’t finish the chapter there; thank God for verses 20-22:
20But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. 21For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
1 Corinthians 15:20-22
Resurrection Sunday is the evidence of Friday’s victory. It is because Christ rose from the dead on that faithful Sunday morning that all who have placed their trust in Him may rise again, free from corruption, free from pain, free from the presence of sin on that glorious resurrection morning to come.
As I reflect on this wonderful truth I find myself saying the very same words the Apostle John wrote in the closing verses of the book of Revelation:
Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
Happy Resurrection Sunday!
